Even as Gujjars changed their plan of protest at the eleventh hour, the policemen didn't intervene and let them sit on the railways tracks on Thursday. Nearly 2,000 cops were deployed in Pilukapura and nearby areas. The senior police officers camped in Bayana, nearly 15 kilometres from the agitation spot.
Sources said the intelligence department sleuths who were gathering reports of the Gujjar mahapanchayat meetings and sharing it with the state government and the local police were also taken aback when Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla, who had given the government a one-hour ultimatum, changed his plans suddenly and the mob marched towards the railway tracks.
The government had deployed police force near the railway tracks between Hindaun and Bayana on Wednesday, but the policemen didn't intervene when the agitators gathered on the tracks on Thursday. The personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were also deployed at the tracks.
Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla, who spearheaded the Gujjar agitations in the past, began a 'Nyay Yatra' on 11 May in view of the reservation issue. The yatra will culminate Thursday in Bharatpur.
Our demand is five per cent reservation under the legal limit of 50 per cent. We are presently getting only one per cent under the limit of 50 per cent and we want four per cent more Singh said.
Members of Gujjar community had on Wednesday threatened to revive their agitation demanding five per cent reservation in government jobs.
In Jaipur, Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had on Wednesday said that the government's doors are always open for the talks. She told reporters in the party office that the matter of Gujjar reservation was subjudice
